The Wayside Power Team seeks to integrate commercially available products into the 2019-2020 design. In current progress the team found profound interest in certain products provided by various companies, including Conductix for third rail and Schunk Group for third rail connectors. The team continues to seek various available means to improve the wayside power design for application into Spartan Superway.

9/19/2019 Literature Review and Preparations
This week we decided on the subdivisions each member will specialize in.
Third Rail | Shane, Alex, Melody, Rey |
Conductor Shoe | Ryan, Chuong, Melody |
Shoe Arm Mechanism | Shane , Rey, Waylon, Melody |
Proximity Sensor | Waylon |
Wear Analysis | Ryan, Chuong |
Insulators | Ryan, Chuong |
Proper Grounding | Waylon |
Safety | Alex |
Power Distribution | Rey, Waylon |
Demonstration | Shane, Melody |
Current/Voltage Monitor | Waylon |
We want to finish our specialized research by 9/23 so that we have time to collect our findings into a presentation. The presentation is due on 9/25. It consists of a literature review, functional specification, challenge anticipation, and Gantt chart.

Last Wednesday the group was tasked to redesign or improve the third rail power delivery system for the full-scale bogie. Our team consists of seven members that include two seniors in materials engineering and 6 seniors majoring in mechanical engineering. The group discussed the current design issues, ideas, and design requirements to prepare for the project proposal. The major points of interest included material properties and wear analysis of the third rail and shoe, finding the possible current, voltage, and power delivery amounts, and mostly how to set up a non-contact to sudden contact mechanism. Our team is concentrating on the third rail system only instead of the third rail and power system. This week we were able to set up communications using Slack and Shared Drive. We also had a Zoom meeting just to catch up on deliverables for the proposal. On the meeting on Wednesday, we set up a weekly meeting time for discussions and administrative work. This will occur each week on Thursdays from 12pm to 1pm. Today we set up Shared Drive and a group email for future use with communications to vendors. We discussed setting up Blogspot and research on deliverables.
